Duffy tired of comparison

11. August 2008 0 Comments

Duffy is getting a bit tired at being compared to other Brit females!

And she admits it is even worse when she is in the States.

She is in the US now to play today’s V Festival in Baltimore ahead of next weekend’s Chelmsford and Staffordshire extravaganzas, and she looked stunning as she made her way to US breakfast programme the Early Show yesterday.

She told me: “Apparently I’m the new Leona Lewis now, not the new Amy, Lily or Kate Nash.

“I don’t take it personally because it’s like a British invasion over there just now, but it can get annoying.

“I told one journalist: ‘I’m gonna put something out there for you now that might change the way you feel.’

“Then I said: ‘There’s this journalist in New York who uses commas and full stops just like you – and he even sounds a bit like you, too.’

“He just looked at me and I was like: ‘Well, how would you feel? How the f*** would you feel? He’s just a writer like you.’

“He got it – in the end.”

Duffy, who releases stunning single Stepping Stone next month, reckons it’s time for the likes of James Blunt, 32, Will Young, 29, and James Morrison, 22, to come out fighting and give the girls some competition.

She said: “Where have they all gone? The male singer-songwriters need to pull their fingers out of their arses and get writing new records.

“They need to be accessible again.”

Duffy´s Stepping Stone (Video)

It’s quite possible that nobody in pop is doing as well as Duffy right now. Think about it - ‘Mercy’ and ‘Warwick Avenue’ both became smashes; Rockferry is the biggest-selling album of the year in the UK and she’s even managed to win over the States. Quite frankly, losing out to Alicia Keys for the Bond theme is a mere blip on the radar.

Anyway, Duffy is aiming to extend her run of good form with ‘Stepping Stone’, the latest release from Rockferry. It’s a more subdued affair than her previous singles, sounding cool, classy and a bit Bacharach & David, but something about it lingers long after you’ve listened to it.

Duffy´s new life

There’s no denying Duffy’s life has changed dramatically since watching music videos as a teen. These days she’s hanging out with the jetaratti, and when she’s not playing gigs in Paris and Milan, she’s performing in New York. She admits, ‘I guess my life is a lot more glamorous than it used to be in terms of the things I wear, the places I go, the places I stay, the places I eat at and the people I meet. Everything is just wonderful, it’s really fantastic – but I don’t get too caught up in it. I do nice things, but, to be honest, they’re not important. I’m not after a big house in the city, or anything like that.’

Oh, and she recently became the first Welsh woman to have a UK No1 hit in 25 years. She says, ‘It’s cool, it makes me feel really proud to have done that. I think Bonnie Tyler was the last Welsh lady at No1 with Total Eclipse Of The Heart, so yeah, it’s great. When I go home to Wales everyone is so happy for me. It’s really lovely.’

Duffy interview

Boston Herald: Hip-hop sister Estelle mouthed off about you and other white soul singers in the British press not long ago, but then you sang at Harlem’s Apollo Theater - a classic soul venue. Was that vindicating?

Duffy: I felt no sense of judgment in that room. It was one of the most spectacular moments in my life, actually. No one can ever take that away from me. When the lights went up and the show started, I thought, ‘This is how it’s meant to be.’ I didn’t put out this record to then sit back and be judged. The bottom line is, you can’t help what color you’re born; every person has emotion, and that’s what soul music is - emotion.

BH: Rumor has it that a game plan existed to groom you and your CD to produce a retro sound; is there any truth to this?

Duffy is almost certain to be chosen to sing the theme song for the forthcoming new ‘James Bond’ film ‘Quantum Of Solace’, according to reports.

The Independent quotes a source at Pinewood Studios, where the film was shot, has said that Duffy is a shoo-in to bag the coveted role.

The newspaper adds that Ladbrokes bookmakers received a “very serious” bet on Duffy being chosen, and have drastically cut their odds on her.

Bonnie Tyler is a Duffy-fan

15. July 2008 0 Comments

Veteran rocker Bonnie Tyler has given her verdict on the biggest singing stars of today.

She admitted she is a confirmed fan of Duffy.

Asked what she thought of today’s music scene during an interview with a Turkish magazine, Tyler said: “I am still a big fan of Tina Turner, but currently I feel so excited about the way Duffy sings. She has an excellent voice. She is a Welsh singer, too, and she has beautiful songs.
